horizont Poultry fencing - a safe and reliable protection for your poultry.
For species-appropriate keeping of chickens and poultry, sufficient run and freedom of movement are essential. A high-quality chicken fence ensures the safety of your poultry and keeps them in the designated area. In addition, the poultry fence offers ideal protection from predators that could harm the chickens.
What is poultry netting?
A poultry net is a simple and safe option for the chicken run. It only takes a few minutes to set up poultry netting and, compared to poultry fencing, it is cheaper to buy and more flexible, as you can change the fenced area at any time.
What distinguishes a high-quality poultry net?
Poultry are one of the most difficult species to herd. Due to their thin legs, insulated beak and feathers, they need strong fencing. Accordingly, poultry nets must be robust and weather-resistant. In the case of horizont poultry nets, the tear-resistant knot points, closely spaced strands and narrow mesh size in the lower area reliably cover this point.
What you should consider when buying a poultry fence
- Determine the desired length of your fence
- Find out the required height of the poultry fence with regard to the breed of chicken kept
- Decide whether the poultry fence should run with or without electricity, so that you have the appropriate accessories together.
- Pay attention to the quality of the netting, especially if you do not take it down in winter
- The mesh size in the lower part of the net should be small enough, otherwise buy ground pegs in addition to have an optimal herding security.
Fixed or mobile poultry fence?
The poultry fence is certainly the better and, above all, more durable option for fencing in a fixed area. The net is ideal for mobile use. Both variants offer excellent protection for the birds against predators and prevent them from escaping. It is up to you to decide which you want to use, depending on your needs.
Advantages of a mobile poultry fence
- Easy handling
- Quick to erect
- Flexible range of application
- The integrated clips allow easy connection of the nets
- High protection against predators
Important notes on poultry fencing
If you have electrified your poultry netting, you must pay attention to the markings.
You are obliged to provide warning signs to warn passers-by.
If you also intend to keep chicks, cover them so that they can easily slip under the netting. To prevent this, use ground pegs so that the net has a stable hold on the ground.
In general, you are responsible for the safety of your animals and ensure that they stay only in the area you have fenced off.
Reasons for an electric fence
Should your chickens try to get under the net, or do you have many foxes or martens in your area? - Then it is advisable to put up an electric f ence.
First and foremost, the electric fence is not intended for the chickens, but against foxes and martens. Due to this, it is advisable to electrify your fence or net. The general idea that the close-meshed area in the lower net is sufficient to prevent the animals from escaping and predators from entering is not so true. There is always the danger that this can happen. That is why we recommend an electric fence, as this is the only way to guarantee that enemies cannot get through the fence.
How high does a poultry fence have to be?
There is no general answer to this question, it depends on the breed of chicken. Larger and heavier chickens rarely fly, but smaller ones reach considerable heights and can thus easily get over the poultry f ence.
Over time, a height of 112 cm has proven to be sufficient. However, poultry nets from 105 cm to 120 cm are available. If you keep a breed that likes to fly, a poultry net up to 200 cm is advisable.
How do I set up the poultry net?
Setting up a poultry net without electricity
- First unroll the net
- Then take the beginning of the fence in your hand and put the first stake into the ground.
- Then stretch the net to the next stake, which you also put into the ground.
- Do this for the other sections of the net.
- Make sure there are no openings where the animals could escape.
- If necessary, secure the bottom of the net with extra ground pegs.
Setting up a poultry net with electricity
Make sure you use the right net here. You must use an electrified net be used.
The setup is the same as described above. Carry out steps 1 to 6 and finally connect the electric fence to your poultry net.
Make sure that you ground your poultry fence or your poultry net properly.
To do this, insert 1 or more earth stakes at least one metre into the ground. If you use several ground stakes, keep a distance of three metres between each one. Then connect them to the electric fence with connecting cables.
Different stakes
You have the choice between stakes with single or double points.
Single point: To be used on stony ground or in the mountains.
Double tip:
- To be used in loose or firm stony soils.
- The pile can be anchored in the ground without tools by stepping on it.
- A double tip achieves greater stability
The choice of posts is up to you, but a double spike is recommended as it ensures greater stability.
Can the poultry fence also be used in winter?
In principle, yes, but there are a few things to bear in mind.
Snow and frost will put a lot of stress on your poultry fence. If you plan to do this, you should pay particular attention to the quality of the netting, as it must be especially robust and weather-resistant.
The conventional plastic posts would not be a sensible choice here. They will break easily in the temperatures. Stakes made of metal would be advisable here.
Tip: Tension a catch cord at regular intervals to provide additional support against the snow masses.
Is poultry netting suitable for a rotational run?
Because the poultry net is quick to set up and take down and flexible in its use, it is ideally suited for a changing run.
There are two options available to you:
- Re-pegging poultry netting.
This option is suitable if you have little garden space available. Remove the net and rebuild it in a new location.
- Lay out two areas at the same time
If you have enough space, build both areas together. This allows you to confine the animals to the desired area and gives you flexibility.
